Prima Donna @ Palace Theatre, Manchester

Took the day off to travel to Manchester to go and see Rufus Wainwright's new opera, Prima Donna, at the Palace Theatre.

Had breakfast packed and then Toni, Sam and I embarked on a nightmare journey. There were traffic jams galore, flash floods, torrential rain and more traffic jams. At one point we looked at aborting the journey as it looked as though it was going to be mission impossible but we perservered. At one point during a rain free traffic jam a passanger got out of a car and retrieved a bottled of wine from the car he was in and then proceeded to start swigging from it:

We arrived at the hotel at 19:05 and booked a taxi for 19:25 and rushed to get ready.

Rain and traffic was still bad as we left the hotel in the taxi and we arrived at the Palace Theatre just as the two minute bell went off. Talk about getting there in the nick of time, we literally sat down in our seats and the performance began!

As for Prima Donna, wow it was superb. Great music and voices and a simple story. Prima Donna was a nice break from the norm for us and well worth the pain of getting there.

Here's the blurb:
"Paris. Bastille Day. 1970. Régine Saint Laurent, once the world’s most revered operatic soprano, is preparing for her return to the stage after six years of silence. But in doing so, Régine is forced to confront the ghosts of her past. Can she defeat the demons that destroyed her career, and emerge triumphantly once more into the spotlight?"

Sam was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it. Although they weren't always needed there were screens providing translations as the opera was written in French.

Follwing the performance we were starving so popped across the road to Felicini's for a lovely meal. It was the perfect way to end the day.
