A Brief History Of The Eternals - Culture Slate

Eternals, Marvel’s latest movie in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is showing exclusively in cinemas now. There are a lot of people out there asking the question, “Who are the Eternals?” Most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies released so far have dealt with well known iconic characters and superheroes, so this question is no real surprise. With that in mind, let’s look at how the Eternals came into being within Marvel Comics. Like a lot of Marvel Comics characters, this all harks back to the vision of Jack Kirby. He had to go round the houses to create what he wanted, and it was certainly worth the wait.

Let The Be Carnage

It's been great to get out and about more and today was no exception. We got up and headed into Eltham for a breakfast at Miggi's.

After Miggi's it was off to the Vue Cineman to watch the Venom sequel, Venom: Let The Be Carnage.

We really enjoyed the first Venom film and Sony did a pretty good job with their Marvel francise. The question was though, would the sequel be as good and take things forward? For me, the answer was no. Don't get me wrong, it's an entertaining film but it was a slow build up to the massive visual effects showdown at the end. The ending was planned and they had to find a way to get there but it just seemed a bit clumsy to me, maybe they could have extended the length to flesh out the story a bit more, there were a few unanswered questions. We got what we wanted though, a massive Venom v Carnage fight.

It isn't ground breaking as a superhero movie though and seemed to be playing it a little bit safe compared with things like The Suicide Squad and Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. On a personal level the very end of the film plus the mid credits scene made the whole thing 100% worth waiting for. 

Not necessarily a must see movie but it is entertaining and worth watching.

Bank holiday, walk, Moulin Rouge, Miami Ink and Jekyll & Hyde The Musical

Bank holidays are a wonderful thing, so nice to wake up and on a Monday and not have to worry about work. Despite the forecast of rain it was nice when I went our for my early morning walk.

With the news that there is going to be a new West End production of Moulin Rouge that we are very much looking forward to, we decided to watch the 2001 film today. We are partial to a musical in this house!

The afternoon was spent chilling out to many episodes of Miami Ink as we needed a tattoo show fix. We had been watching Black Ink Crew: New York but could only find the first two seasons out of eight so moved on to Black Ink Crew: Chicago. We've done all six seasons of that and are now waiting for it to start up again as it went on hiatus as a result of COVID-19.

We went back into musical mode with dinner and watched the 2001 performance of Jekyll & Hyde The Musical from Broadway HD. This is the classic tale in musical form starting none other than David Hasselhoff. It was OK, a couple of good songs and a load more filler. It did have the Hoff to carry it through though so it wasn't all bad, well carrying it through is a stretch but he was the best bit about it.

Early walk in the snow, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier trailer and hockey catch up

We were out an about at 06:30 this morning for a nice snowy walk. It was lovely.

Marvel have just dropped a new The Falcon And The Winter Soldier trailer ready for it's release on March 19th. I have to say, this is really looking really good!

The evening was spent doing a mass hockey catch up on the games from last night

Gorgeous sky, baking, RuPaul, Wandavision and Anchorman

There was a lovely sky this morning when I got up. These photos don't do it justice...

It put me in a very good mood I have to say. Spirits lifted it was time for the weekly bread baking. These ones came out a really well and I was very happy with them. I love the smell of these baking in the oven.

After the baking I had to do a quick bought of work to complete the migrations for this weekend and then it was time to kick back and relax.

Traditional breakfast was prepared and then there we did a catch up with RuPaul's Drag Race UK and RuPaul's Drag Race. Wasn't happy with the UK elimination but the US one was fine with me.

WandaVision this week was absolutely superb. The reveals are getting bigger each week. This series appears to be the perfect platform to launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase Four. It's going to lead into other shows and movies. At the end of the episode we had Wanda's brother Pietro (Quicksilver) appear. The twist was that instead of being played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson from the recent MCU films he as now being played by Evan Peters who had the role in the Fox X-Men movies (prior to the Disney buyout). Funny moment there was Darcy Peters exclaiming, "he's been recast" which fitted beautifully with the TV show angle that WandaVision has been taking. Have to confess that  might have got a bit emotional at that point. I wonder who else might make an appearance in future episodes?

Steak dinner and Anchorman in the evening!

Refreshed, rain, cuppa, Drag Race, NHL, WandaVision and Tomb Raider

You can't beat a good night of sleep to leave you feeling refreshed and raring to go. A walk was a nice idea but it was absolutely tipping it down so that idea was shelved.

I made a cuppa and then caught up with Batwoman. Episode two was not as good as the first one but it was still way better then anything from season one.  It's still the worst DC TV show but it is getting better.

Traditional Saturday cooked breakfast was accompanied by RuPaul's Drag Race UK. Loving the UK queens, they are far nicer than the US ones.

During the day we did some NHL catch up taking in a couple of full games and lots of quick recaps.

RuPaul's Drag Race (the regular US edition) catch up with a very nice Indian take away.

WandaVision this week was absolutely superb. We are finally getting some good reveals based on little hints that have been dropped in previous episodes. The running time for these is too short, I want more! If you love the Marvel Cinematic Universe films then this is an absolute must watch!

Toni went and had a bath so I spent a couple of hours on the PS4 playing Shadows Of The Tomb Raider. 

Baking, work, Drag Race, Rangers loss, WandaVision and American Gods

The usual Saturday routine was in full effect today. Got up and got my baking groove on which I really enjoy doing. 

I then had to embark on another load of migration work which has been a regular part of my weekends for a long time, The good news is I have next weekend off and then one final weekend and that is it all competed for now. Phew!

A much needed breakfast and the latest episode of RuPaul's Drag Race UK was the perfect way to chill. This was a brilliant episode, I really love their Rusical musical shows.Staying in the Drag zone we moved on to episode four of RuPaul's Drag Race. 

Hockey time came around as we watch the New York Rangers v Pittsburgh Penguins game from last night. First period ended with the Rangers down 0 - 1. Second period was better with the Rangers taking a 3 - 2 lead into the third period. With the game tied 3 - 3 at the end of the third it was into overtime. 3 - 3 after overtime and then Rangers lost the shoot out and the game 3 - 4.

Dinner viewing tonight was WandaVision. Litlle by little this show opens up with little hints of what might be coming but there are no answers to the question.

We then started on Season 3 of American Gods. 

Really enjoying this and can't wait to see how the story unfolds this season.

Novelty start, Avenger's gaming, Rangers and Despicable Me 3

Didn't get up until 09:30 today which was a real novelty as normally I am awake long before that and end up just getting up. Decided to jump on the PS4 for some Marvel's Avengers single player fun. It's a game that I can take slow and steady which is perfect for me. Very happy as I now have Iron Man to toy with!

We nervously started watching the New York Rangers v New York Islanders game from last night. It was nervous due to how badly the first game went. A very encouraging first period ended with the Rangers leading 2 - 0. Second period continued to build well and ended with Rangers now leading 4 - 0. The Rangers won the game 5 - 0. It was like watching a completely different team so hopefully thy are now passed opening night nerves and are settling down as a team. 

We then moved on to the Carolina Hurricanes v Detroit Red Wings game. This was much closer game until the final 2 minutes. It was tied 2 - 2 and then Detroit had a surge and they won the game 4 - 2.

Dinner today was a roast chicken that I had marinated in a Nando's peri peri sauce. I was amazing even if I do say so myself LOL 

Despicable Me 3 was the movie of choice tonight for some Gru and Minions goodness.

We finished the day off with some more NHL catch up and then some Miami Ink.

Baking, Drag Race, WandaVision, NHL and The Mummy Returns

It's Saturday so it was up and about to get my baking groove on. These little beauties came out really well.

A massive breakfast/lunch and the latest episode of the main RuPaul's Drag Race.

Disney+ dropped the first two episodes of the new Marvel TV series, WandaVision. This show blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision -two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives-begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

It got off to a good start and I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds and how they start to build hooks into other upcoming Marvel TV shows and movies.

As we didn't fancy watching any whole games of hockey we worked our way through the ten minute condensed highlights of all the games that have been played since the season started on Wednesday. It's actually a great way of keeping on top of teams without just reading a final score.We will still watch complete games for those teams that we are fully invested in. We've adopted a team from each division (outside of the New York Rangers) as follows:

MassMutual East - Boston Bruins (except when they play the Rangers)

Discover Central - Carolina Hurricanes

Honda West - Minnesota Wild 

Scotia North - Vancouver Canucks

Our dinner movie tonight was The Mummy Returns. 

Such a silly film but fun to watch nonetheless. We will be watching The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor and The Scorpion King at some point in the next few days. A bit of googling revealed that The Scorpions King had four sequels. How the hell did that get FOUR sequels? 

New Star Wars and Marvel

So yesterday Disney did an Investor's Day 2020 thing and there were lots of wonderful announcements for upcoming things.

Got up this morning and had a real desire to watch a load of rock/metal audition clips from The Voice. We watched a couple of hours worth which was great fun. There is some really banging talent out there! As a result of one of the songs I dug out a compilation of Sting and The Police to remind myself how good they were.

Shite job of the day was cleaning the rats our but it wasn't as bad as it could have been and at least they are now very happy and don't stink LOL 

Decided to watch the final instalment of the Fox X-Men movies, The New Mutants. Dark Phoenix was quite good so I was using that as the bar to measure this one.

Sam's delicious schnitzels were accompanied by lots more Botched.

Project Luminous - Star Wars: The High Republic

Lucasfilm have just released the following video to support their new Project Luminous Star Wars project.

Project Luminous will cover stories covering the High Republic era across novel. comics and other media. It seems to be focused on Jedi across the galaxy....


Star Wars: The High Republic, which has previously been referred to as “Project Luminous”, will be set in an era when the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are at their zenith, about 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This period on the Star Wars timeline will not overlap any of the filmed features or series currently planned for production, giving creators and partners a vast amount of room to tell Star Wars stories with new adventures and original characters.

Film trailers from the Super Bowl weekend

It was Super Bowl weekend in the USA and as such the film studios use the event to showcase lots of trailers. Here are a few for films I want to see.

2020 looks to be a promising year for films.

Morbius trailer

Sony Pictures next Marvel film will be Morbius.

Jared Leto is the main character Michael Morbius (The Living Vampire) and it could be this will be one of his finest performances after his OK portayal of Joker in DCs Suicide Squad.


Lots of questions doing the rounds with this one....
Will we see Morbius in the Venomverse or the MCU? He was in the Spider-Man comics so maybe he'll be in a Spider-Man film. I have no idea but I can't wait to find out! Roll on July!

Dark Phoenix

We finally got round to watching the last of the Fox X-Men movies, Dark Phoenix. The reviews at the time put us off of going to see it at the cinema but I really wanted to see what it was like.

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite, not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The reviews weren't great but it wasn't too bad. Dark Phoenix seemed like a lazy attempt to close out the X-Men series as Fox headed into the Disney buy out and felt somewhat rushed as a result. It carried the same look and feel of the previous X-Men films so there was great familiarity but it seemed to lack something.

The New Mutants

20th Century Fox have recently dropped a trailer for The New Mutants.

This Fox superhero horror film is based around the X-Men universe. I did wonder if it would ever see the light of day after Disney bought Fox but it seems the green light has been given and now it's all systems go.

The New Mutants actually looks pretty good so that's a definite cinema trip coming up in April.

Black Widow trailer, chonky cat and heating!

Well here's a novelty, a post about films that isn't Star Wars! Marvel have dropped their first trailer for the upcoming Black Widow film due for release in May 2020.  Another thing to get excited about!

This will be the first of the Phase 4 series of films and will be followed up in 2020 by The Eternals.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been a wonderful journey and I am really looking forward to seeing where they take things next.

I know this was just a trailer but there's enough there to have me gripped and wanting to see it so job done!

I was off work today as we had a British Gas engineer coming round. Spotted this chunky cat in the back garden delicately balanced on the fence!

The good news is we now have fixed central heating and all of our radiators are working beautifully for the first time in nearly three years! Woohoo!

The final trailer for Avengers Endgame has now dropped and it's one hell of a ride! There's also a very nice poster too!

It's still six weeks away but I am now getting really excited for April 26th! Check out the latest trailer here:

Captain Marvel

It was off to Bexleyheath tonight for nommy foods and to see Captain Marvel.

What a film, this is what Wonder Woman should have been. A strong female character with no need to throw in a love interest. Well-played Marvel. The fan service was great with some more back story being added to Nick Fury and it was great to see Agent Coulson back in a film again. Captain Marvel is the perfect setup to Avengers: Endgame so stay right until the end!!!

The soundtrack gets an honourable mention too with key 90s hits blending in perfectly to what's happening on screen.

Marvel hit the spot once again!
