Hollywood Doll @ The Gaff

Oh what a night!
This was the big one for HOLLYWOOD DOLL, our first gig in London.
I'll skip the bit about Matt and I getting grumpy because the rest of the band were late and get on to the rest of the proceedings!

ELECTRIC LOVE
This was a strange band to have on the bill. They were very mellow and trippy (Toni thought they sounded a lot like The Orb). The music was good but it just didn't feel right for the night that was on offer. They would be the sort of band you might want to close an evening off once everyone was chilled.

WHITE LIGHTNING
Now here we have a story to tell! These guys (and gal) were interesting. They started off really well offering an AC/DC & Airbourne style, exaggerated gestures and a good groove. The singer/lead guitarist was wireless and went for a wander around the crowd and ended up in the bar area where he leaned back and the barman poured beer down his throat. He then stood up, turned towards Toni and I and a second or so later spat all the beer in our faces! Needless to say we were NOT impressed. If it hadn't been for the fact that we were playing later on I'd have probably swung for him but I was too worried that we would have our set pulled. Sadly this incident made me have an instant dislike for the singer and thus I didn't enjoy the rest of their set. Afterwards it transpired that this little walk about was not impromptu at all and he had discussed going into to the bar beforehand with the bar stuff which just made it seem even more contrived. They are worth checking out, just don't stand near the singer if he goes for a walk mid-set!

SILICONE BULLET
Not sure what to write about this lot. I didn't really enjoy them very much, too many songs were blatant rip offs of Guns N Roses and Skid Row riffs and they just didn't really do it for me at all.

HOLLYWOOD DOLL
It felt like we were on fire tonight. This was definitely our best gig yet! The on stage was awesome and the crowd gave us an excellent response, there were groups of people dancing away and it all just felt so right. If only every gig could be like this. We came, we played and the songs spoke for themselves and we had a great blast. We had so many people come up to us afterwards and tell us how much they had enjoyed our set which was a wonderful little boost for us.

KILLING IRIE
These guys totally rocked! Punk psychobilly with strong vocals. They were joined tonight on drums by Jaimie from the UK Subs as their own drummer couldn't make it (made all the more impressive by the fact he learned half the set at the venue with a laptop). It was a non-stop set with fast upbeat songs that the crowd lapped up. These guys were absolutely the best of the night and I'd love to see them again.
