SpecSavers, shaving heads, ice hockey and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Disappointment

It was off to SpecSavers this morning. Toni had an eye test and I was picking up my second pair. Just before we left we had a leaflet posted through the door with a voucher for a £5 eye test so Toni ended up saving money before she had even started. It took a little longer than expected as she was offered a free contact lens test as well which she was delighted about when it became clear that she could wear them!

After SpecSavers we headed off to Coffee Town and met Jamie there for lunch. I won't bore you with what we ate but it was delicious. After lunch we headed back home. Toni had agreed to sort out Jamie's hair and as it was a lovely day she decided to do it in the garden. We ran an extension cable through the kitchen window and Toni clippered away. As it was quite long Toni had great fun with it before finally going for the big shave.

The afternoon was spent watching ice hockey. We started off with the game that we passed on last night. Buffalo Sabres v New York Rangers. What a game. Rangers came out with a 4 - 8 victory and managed to score 5 goals in 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Following that we went live to watch New Jersey Devils defeat Florida Panthers 6 - 2. This was a disappointing result as I really want the Devils to lose! LOL While all this was going on I was catching up with tweets of the Wightlink Raiders v Chelmsford Chieftains game to get a handle on how things are likely to start out tomorrow. Thankfully Chelmsford will be heading into the second leg of the Play Off Final with a one goal advantage after a 3 - 4 on the Isle of Wight.

The day was rounded off with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I was dreading watching it as I'd heard mixed views on it. It wasn't a good film for me.It was very slow in places and seemed unnecessarily bloated with scenes that were there for no reason and it was way too long. The landscapes and scenery was stunning as we'd expect from a Peter Jackson Tolkien film but some of the effects and CGI were a little ropey which really surprised me. They were more like cut scenes from a video game so not really good enough to suggest reality when compared to the real live action going on around it. I won't even go into the artistic licence that Jackson has played on the story!. If they could have managed to cut the running time down this would have been much better.

When they announced that this adaption was being made in three parts I was not happy. Clearly the Tolkien franchise is a licence to print money. This first part ran to nearly three hours. Hard to believe that they are going to make this trilogy of a short book run for somewhere between six and nine hours! Hopefully the next segment will be shorter and might restore my faith a little. The really annoying thing about splitting it up is that it will be ages before the whole thing can be watched back to back in its entirety to actual get the full story. Still, roll on 13th December 2013 when we get to see part two, The Desolation Of Smaug. The final part is not out until December 2014 so it will be 2015 before we get the complete thing! Bastards!

Here's a nice trailer for the film:
