The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones

Tonight we went off to Bexleyheath to see The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones. Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

This was an interesting film. I've not read the best-selling books so I went in with an open mind. It's a reasonable supernatural adventure tale with some stunning sets and pretty awesome effects. I did get very grumpy though when the pentagram was misappropriated in its use by the bad guy. The film was full of wonderful runes and symbols so why they had to drag out that old cliche I have no idea. I suspect it was a thinly veiled attempt at making pagans (& witches) appear as though they are always bad/evil.

Having read the book, however, Toni was less than impressed. She summed the film up as a cross between Twilight and Harry Potter. I think that was a little harsh although I can see where she was coming from! You'll have to judge for yourselves.
