Toni and I went to Bexleyheath tonight to go and see the remake of Carrie. It was more out of curiosity more than anything. It's not a bad film although if you have read the book or seen the original then approach with caution.
Chloƫ Grace Moretz (of Kick-Ass fame) makes a pretty good Carrie White and Julianne Moore was fantastic as her self harming bible bashing mother Margaret. The film starts off well setting the scene for Margaret's issues which then leads into the shower scene where Carrie is first subjected to extreme bullying/mocking and we get to see the first hint of her powers.
After that this re-imagining all starts to go a little awry with Carrie starting to hone and develop her powers rather than just not understanding them. The story matches the original as we head to the prom and have the dumping of pigs blood. The only real difference seemed to be that whereas the original Carrie lets loose her powers after being humiliated once again and pushing her to the limit but as a reaction the new Carrie lets rip and then embarks on a spree of vengeance killings which is possible because she has learned to control her powers. This didn't sit well with us. As with the original the film ends with the chance for a sequel to be made!
If you haven't read the book or seen the original then this is a reasonable film and worth going to see. If you have seen the original then you will be drawing comparisons all night long as it is so similar and will probably feel a little let down as it could have been so much better.
