Pirates & Smugglers Festival - day 2

Today was the day that it was really all about. Just like the Crabchurch Weekend, the Pirates & Smugglers Festival was created to raise money for the restoration of Weymouth's Old Town Hall. Things kicked off with a massive breakfast at The Sailors Return and then we went and donned our finest pirate gear.

It was then time to meet the large group of volunteers who were preparing to take to the streets of Weymouth in a Pirates v Revenue Men scenario.

Once we'd all sorted out our insurance and had weapons checked we split into three groups. There were two large groups of pirates and a small group of revenue men. Most of our friends stuck with the pirate groups as they knew most of the people in those groups. Toni and I (and one other couple) volunteered to accompany the revenue men as there were only three of them! Being a pirate this wasn't the best outcome but sacrifices had to be made LOL

Here are the three lovely chaps with Chris H and Jack Sparrow just before we all went our separate ways.

We did a lot of walking and shaking of buckets. We were given lots of boxes of Clipper tea to try and sell (as contraband) to boost the fundraising. It was great fun approaching people in the streets and getting them to part with their cash. Some were even treated to skirmishes between the pirates and the revenue men when our paths crossed as we wandered around town. There was no planned route so these altercations were all by chance.

Here are John, George and Ted (our revenue men) posing in front of their beloved King George!

Later in the afternoon all three groups met up at The Golden Lion for a large procession down the High Street as a consolidated fundraising push. We were led by Taloch, Kayleigh and Josh from The Dolmen who drummed up a marching beat for us! The next few photos are courtest of Chris Hermon Photography as Toni and I were busy extracting cash from the innocent bystanders!

After our procession it was time to go our separate ways to eat, drink, sleep or whatever took our fancy before meeting up at The Golden Lion later on to see The Dolmen perform one of their Pirate's Keep gigs. We did the eat and sleep thing!

The gig was fantastic, The Golden Lion was absolutely packed and it was boiling hot.

..and here's a post gig Toni!
